More than 2,000 Everglades Petitions Delivered to Gov. Crist

TALLAHASSEE - Progress Florida, in partnership with leading environmental groups, today delivered more than 2,000 petition signatures from concerned citizens urging Gov. Crist to stand up to developers and protect the Everglades. The signatures were gathered online in less than two weeks.

"Charlie Crist has established a reputation as the green governor. Now thousands of people from across the state and the nation are calling on him to do the right thing and protect the Everglades," said Damien Filer, Progress Florida's Political Director. "Billions in federal Everglades restoration dollars are in jeopardy if Florida doesn't do its part to protect this national treasure."

On May 6th, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved two new developments outside the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) despite objections from planning staff, a veto by Mayor Carlos Alvarez, and opposition from thousands of citizens and organizations mobilized by the "Hold the Line" coalition. Governor Crist's Department of Community Affairs has 45 days after receiving the development applications from the County to either approve or deny them.

"If Gov. Crist fails to act, these two new developments will allow urban sprawl to continue its march right up to the edge of the Everglades," said Mark Ferrulo, Executive Director of Progress Florida.

Not only would eliminating the UDB impact the Everglades; it poses a serious threat to drinking water supplies; would cause further traffic problems; and pave wetlands critical for flood control.
