Our neighbors in the Bahamas

Floridians always come together during times of crisis and natural disaster, and our neighbors in the Bahamas need our help. While we count our blessings that Hurricane Dorian’s impacts on our communities here in Florida will be minimal, the families and neighborhoods of our closest Caribbean neighbor, just 50 miles off our coast, have been utterly devastated.

“We are in the midst of a historic tragedy.”
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis

Floridians always come together during times of crisis and natural disaster, and our neighbors in the Bahamas need our help. While we count our blessings that Hurricane Dorian’s impacts on our communities here in Florida will be minimal, the families and neighborhoods of our closest Caribbean neighbor, just 50 miles off our coast, have been utterly devastated.

There are many reputable relief organizations springing to action. Here are three to consider supporting during the current rescue and recovery mobilization:

World Central Kitchen, is run by celebrity chef and philanthropist José Andrés and they provide food to people after natural disasters. Mr. Andrés and a relief team have arrived in Nassau and are setting up kitchens as I write this.

State Representative Shevrin Jones (Broward County) a Bahamian-American on the front lines of the recovery effort, is encouraging contributions to the Miami based Smile Trust Hurricane Relief Fund.

“It’s total devastation. It’s decimated. Apocalyptic. It’s not rebuilding something that was there; we have to start again,” said Lia Head-Rigby, co-founder of HeadKnowles, another excellent on-the-ground relief group to support.

Thank you for considering supporting any or all these critical efforts.
